I have been swayed to re-install Vista on my laptop today. Two things have tempted me to do it.
A friend has assured me that VMWare will now work on RC1, if not I will hold him personally responsible.

VMWare Workstation 5 runs on Vista RC1. you will get a message that you’re running Windows version 6 and that that’s not a supported version, but it runs pretty smooth.
I didn’t experience any performance loss. I even experienced a little performance gain!
VMWare Workstation let Vista RC1 crash just once and that was because I was modifying memory settings of a virtual machine, while another was shutting down and I had no system memory left. Vista crashed with a blue screen of death, rebooted and asked me to do a memory test. I did, it booted, did the test and found no errors.
So overall I’m still pretty enthousiastic on Vista RC1 and VMWare Workstation running together.
